John Ball 1 Wheelwright of Hastings born 1753 baptized 9 May 1753, All Saints Church, Hastings died 28 April 1827, Hastings 2 will dated 9 April 1808 and proved 3 November 1827 Notes: His children are given as listed in his will of 1808, as listed in the request for Counsel's opinion on recovering rent on the Wheelwright's shop for Elizabeth Arrow, and also from the Gravestones in All Saints graveyard. As I have been able to establish them, I have approximate birth dates for all but the eldest son. I slotted him in (no evidence) in as second child, since there is a gap at that poing. The birth dates start at around 1780. There are seemingly only two possible marriages for this couple: Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index: Place: Hastings All Saints, East Sussex, Date: 10 Sep 1771: Subject: John BALL, bach otp Spouse: Elizabeth HANSON, wid St.Mary in Castle (B) witnesses: John KIRBY Wm COPPARD Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index: Place: Battle, East Sussex, Date: 21 Apr 1780: Subject: John BALL, bach Westfield Spouse: Elizabeth WENHAM, otp (B) My guess is that this family is a product of the second marriage above, John Ball with Elizabeth Wenham. None of their children are to be found baptised in either All Saints or St Clements (I have not checked Westfield) and the births seem to start around 1780. There are four baptisms in All Saints, Hastings, in the early 1770s, for children of a John and Elizabeth Ball, but since there are no baptisms to be found in the parish church registers for the later children, whose birth dates we are reasonably sure of, perhaps the family was non- conformist and we may be dealing with two couples named John and Elizabeth Ball. (see my notes on another John Ball).
