California required deaths to be registered at state level starting in 1905. Before that time, deaths were usually recorded at the county level. I was able to find the death dates for Alice and Richard Ball. Alice died in Alameda county on 4 May 1917, at the age of 61. Richard M. Ball died in Alameda county on 11 September 1931, at the age of 75.

Richard Marsters Ball, b. 1856 Adelaide, was living in Oakland,California in 1900, mrried to the widow Alice Plunkett (nee Devers). He lived until at least 1920."
