Johannes Valentejn Duurgaart
born Zweebruggen 1
 | Notes: | Is this his baptism:
Swartland, baptisms, page 66, 1767 Den 3 Feberuarij Jan De ouwders zijn Valentijn Diergaart en Elizabet van de Caap, als getuijgen zijn Willem Koopman en Elizabeth Jonker
In which case the following would apply to Valentijn Diergaart, his father:
He had been a soldier in the service of the Dutch East India Company stationed in the Castle, but on 19th May he absented himself and had not been seen again, the assumption being that he had gone far into the interior beyond the European settlement, amon gthe Hottentots. A proclomation of 1762 had offered pardon to such runaways if they returned within two weeks, but he had not been seen. Now, in 1775, considering the miseries he had endured during years of wandering, he was granted a pardon and, since he was no longer in a state to be of service to the Company nor able to support himself, he must be sent back to the Netherlands by the first returning ship. (TANAP, Resolutions of the Council of Policy, C. 153, 21 Feb 1775)
Nevertheless, he appears having children baptised in 1793. Could this be his son, rather than he himself? |
