Jan Jansz: van Eeden 1
blacksmith 2
of Stellenbosch 3
born circa 1637, Oldenburg 4
died circa 1704, (assumed from date of inventory) 5
will dated 26 May 1702 6
Notes:
He and his wife, Lijsbet Jans, were apparently sent back to
Europe in March 1677 because of problems caused by her
habitual drunkenness (C.G.de Wet, below) and in the muster
roll of 1677 they are noted to be ready to leave (VC 39, p.56,
'staet te vertrecken'). He does not appear in the muster rolls
of 1678 or 1679 (there are none for 1680 and 1681) but is back
in that of 1682, working in partnership with Mattijs Greef,
another blacksmith.

( The marriage ended in divorce in May 1684, on
grounds of her adultery.

Jan van Eeden born circa 1675
born circa 1675 8
baptized 19 January 1676, Cape Town 9

Notes: In his father's will dated 26th May 1702,
he is stated to have already had too much in the
way of money from his father, an amount stated
to be f 230, and is left a further amount of f 250
with which he must be satisfied. This would have
meant that he had no further claim on the estate
of Jan Jansz van Eden and when the relevant
inventory was drawn up in 1704, this eldest son
is consequently not named as one of the heirs.
