There is a Daniel Simpson, miller, listed in Larne as at the 1846
edition of the National Commercial Directory of Ireland.


Belfast Commercial Chronicle - Saturday 11 August 1827.
Carrickfergus Assizes, Wednesday August 8th, 1827.
Daniel Lynn, for feloniously obtaining a quantity of oat-meal,
the property of Wm. Simpson, Larne, with intent to defraud the
said William Simpson.
William Simpson, knows the prisoner. He was formerly in the
employment of Mr. Malcolm McNeill. He came to his office, on
three occasions, in the months of May, June and July last; on
each of these occasions he got a quantity of oatmeal in the
name of Mr. McNeill.
This witnesses# evidence was corroborated by that of his son,
Daniel Peden Simpson.
Malcom McNeill, swore - the prisoner hs not been in his
employment since Oct. 1825. Guilty; 6 months imprisonment
at hard labour.

Belfast Commercial Chronicle - Saturday 24 March 1832
Married - On Wednesday last, at the residenc of her Father, by
the Rev. Dr. Ledlie, Elizabeth, second daughter of William
Simpson, of Larne Mills, Esq. to John Crawford, of Ballykeel, Esq.

Notes: On his gravestone he is described as the 'youngest son
of the late William Simpson of Larne'. In the Simpson family notes
collected by Ada Ethel Simpson (1874 - 1953) and supplied by the
late Andrew McMurray of Cape Town, his birth year is given as 1819.

At the 1841 Census he was an Assistant Surgeon at the Royal
Haslar Hospital, Hampshire.

William Simpson, in a letter dated November 1858, stated that
his brother was '38 years of age - was my pupil - was in the first
China war for which he received a medal - on his return from the
North Sea was appointed surgeon-superintendant of The Royal
Naval Hospital at Malta - served [thus] during the whole of the
late war in the Crimea, and is now surgeon superintendant of
Haslar Hosptial Portsmouth'.

HMS Plover spent two years in the Western Arctic as supply ship
during the 1852-1854 expedition to search for Sir John Franklin.
Among the officers of the Plover was John Simpson as surgeon.
