Phillips, he studied at Edinburgh (MD and MRCS, 1832) and practised in Cape Town where he found time to servoe on the Council of the South African Literary and Scientific Institute and on the Medical Committee. He had an extensive and varied private practice, tending not only wealthy people in the town and its growing suburbs but also working class immigrants from Europe, poor laundresses who had probably been slaves before emancipation in 1838, and Muslim religious leaders. Only two children are named as heirs in his death notice of 1889, his daughter Johanna Susanna Elzabe, and the children of his deceased daughter Elizabeth Maria Henrietta Peebles. One must presume that all other of his children had predeceased him and without leaving surviving heirs of their own.
