Maria van Brakel 1
born 1677, at the Cape 2
baptized 30 May 1677, Cape Town 3
Notes:
On 15th August 1713 she was asked by the Council of Policy
if she was able and prepared to continue providing meat to
the Company under the contract issued to her deceased
husband, Jacob Louw, and she replied that she was able to
fulfill the contract but that only 1 month of it remained.

It was therefore decided to grant the meat contract to her
for the next year as well. One of her husbands guarantors
was also deceased (Wessel Pretorius) but Adam Tas, the
other, was willing to remain as her guarantor.

Under the contract drawn up by her mother-in-law, in Augst
1713, she had the management of the Louw farms situated
on the Liesbeek River. At the end of 1717 Maria van Brakel
presented statements from four witnesses declaring their
knowledge of the bounds of the estate of Jan Pietersz Louw
during his life time, so that she could establish the bounds of
her land where it lay next to that of Hans Caper Gerringer.
She asked the Council of Policy to approve the survey which
she had had done with their permission. It was decided to
draw up a new map to avoid future disputes.

Aletta aged 6 months. His widow stated that the loan farm
was worth nothing and that she intended to abandon it -
their belongings were minimal.

Nicolaas Louw born 1713
born 1713 23
baptized 25 June 1713, Cape Town 24

Notes: He died presumably before 1723, since he is not

joint will of that year with her second husband, Jan Valk.

# The parents of Maria van Brakel

I have assumed that she was the daughter Maria mentioned
by Adriaan van Brakel in his will of 1699. Her age (46) as given
in her will of 1723 tallies exactly with the baptismal date of the
former. In additions, several of the children of Adriaan van
Brakel appear as witnesses at the baptims of the Louw
children, and also Willem ten Damme, named as guardian in
the will of 1699. When Leendert van Brakel made his verbal
will in 1713 he named as his heirs his two sisters Lijsbeth and
Maria van Brakel, and Jacobus Louw, in whose house he died,
is described as his brother-in-law.
